The Elmwood Mine in Smith County, Tennessee, is renowned worldwide for producing some of the finest fluorite specimens ever discovered. Operating primarily as a zinc mine, Elmwood gained fame in the mineral collecting community for its exceptional fluorite crystals, among other minerals.

Fluorite specimens from the Elmwood Mine are highly prized for their exceptional color, clarity, and crystal habits. The fluorite crystals from Elmwood exhibit a wide range of colors, including vivid purples, blues, greens, and yellows. Some specimens even display color zoning, with distinct bands or zones of different hues.

One of the most distinctive features of Elmwood fluorite is its incredible fluorescence under ultraviolet (UV) light. When exposed to UV light, the fluorite crystals fluoresce in vibrant colors, ranging from intense blue and purple to brilliant green and yellow. This fluorescence adds an extra dimension to the specimens’ beauty and makes them highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts.

Elmwood fluorite crystals often form in complex and intricate crystal habits, including cubic, octahedral, and dodecahedral shapes. The crystals can range in size from small, thumbnail-sized specimens to large, museum-quality pieces.

In addition to fluorite, the Elmwood Mine has produced specimens of other minerals such as sphalerite, calcite, and barite, further adding to its allure among collectors.

The Elmwood Mine ceased operations in the early 2000s, but its legacy lives on through the extraordinary mineral specimens it produced. Elmwood fluorite remains highly coveted by collectors for its exceptional beauty, fluorescence, and historical significance within the world of mineralogy.
