The Green River Formation in Wyoming is renowned for its exceptionally preserved fossils, dating back to the Eocene epoch, around 50 million years ago. The fine-grained sediment of ancient lake beds created ideal conditions for fossilization, resulting in a diverse array of well-preserved fossils. Among the most notable finds are fish fossils, including gar, paddlefish, and various trout species. The formation also yields fossils of insects, plants, and occasionally larger vertebrates like crocodiles, turtles, and birds. The exceptional preservation extends to delicate details, such as fish scales and insect wings, offering valuable insights into the ancient ecosystem and evolution.
